East Coast Open

Tournament History

The East Coast Open was first played in 1978 at Myopia Polo Club in Hamilton, Massachusetts. The trophy used for the event, known as the Perry Trophy, designed by Oscar L. Lanz, was first awarded in 1905 and retired by Myopia Polo Club in 1909. Per tournament stipulations at the time, if a team won the competition three times within five years, they would keep the coveted trophy. Myopia accomplished this prior to WWI and thus owned the trophy.

It was then put into use in 1978, when Donald V. Little Sr. established the East Coast Open at Myopia Polo Club. The tournament remained at Myopia for 25 consecutive years until 2003. Throughout the ‘80s and early ‘90s the East Coast Open boasted an average of 10 teams each year. Just two years after creating his own club, Peter Brant’s White Birch garnered their first East Coat Open title, of a record 12 total wins to date. White Birch repeated their win the following year against an impressive field of 13 teams, a tournament record.

In 2005, the East Coast Open moved to the renowned Greenwich Polo Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. Over the past 10 years, White Birch has dominated competition with nine wins; including a notable five-year streak from 2005-2009. Aside from powerhouse White Birch, only two other teams have succeeded in securing the title in the last decade; Tupungato (Carlucho Arellano, Mariano Obregon, Luis Rinaldini, Nic Roldan) in 2010 and most recently Audi (Miguel Novillo Astrada, Juan Bollini Jr., Marc Ganzi and Nic Roldan) in 2015. Last year’s East Coast Open final match-up between Audi and White Birch resulted in a thrilling overtime for the second year in a row, White Birch recovering their esteemed title 12-11.

This year, four teams will descend on Greenwich Polo Club to compete in the Northeast’s most prestigious high-goal tournament. Both Audi and Postage Stamp Farm will be returning to the field, alongside newcomers Hublot and GSA. Missing from the action this year is White Birch, opening up the field to a potential first time East Coast Open champion. Many of the world’s top polo competitors, teams and players will be vying for their inscription on the Perry Trophy, amongst Hall of Famers such as Adam Snow, Hector Galindo, Owen Rinehart and Guillermo “Memo” Gracida.

East Coast Open

Home to the celebrated White Birch polo team, Greenwich Polo Club, in Greenwich, Connecticut, is synonymous with the name of founder Peter Brant. A polo icon and team owner exemplar, Brant’s passions extend beyond the boards into the intellectual world of contemporary art. There is more than meets the eye at this modern club situated in the bucolic rolling hills of Conyers Farm.

On the cusp of their thirty-sixth season, Greenwich Polo Club has become the premier high-goal venue in the Northeast. Attracting world-class polo professionals including a long list of polo hall of famers, teams are drawn to Greenwich’s three immaculate fields used exclusively for USPA sanctioned tournaments. During their season ranging from June to mid-September, all efforts are focused entirely on upper-level competition (16-20 goal). Concentrating on a superior polo experience, Greenwich aims to enamor spectators with the sport and serve as a beacon for aspiring players.

The Brant Foundation Art Study Center, which is dedicated to the education and awareness of contemporary art, provides a breathtaking backdrop to all the polo action. There are always sculptures or artwork on display outside which can be seen from both the Foundation and the polo fields including the present sculpture, “Big Clay" by Urs Fischer, as well as "Ali Frazier," a sculpture by artist Richard Serra. Admission is free and open to the public Monday through Friday with an appointment, and open every polo Sunday from 1:00 – 3:00pm ET to the public.

Of the 50 matches played over the summer for three prestigious tournament titles (The Monty Waterbury, Silver Cup® and East Coast Open), nine are open to the public. Over 3,000 spectators from New York City, and Fairfield and Westchester Counties descend upon the Connecticut countryside for the featured Sunday 3:00pm ET matches. The juxtaposition of contemporary art in the context of the luscious Greenwich landscape creates an experience that is not likely to be found anywhere else in the country.
