On Saturday, September 17, 2016 the 32nd playing of the Harriman Cup was held at Bethpage Polo at the Park in Old Bethpage, New York. For over three decades, the Harriman Cup has commemorated the life of diplomat, polo player and former New York Governor Averell Harriman. The Harriman Cup is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of polo and supporting the collegiate polo programs at Yale and University of Virginia. The organization has raised over $1 million for the schools’ undergraduate polo teams.
On a picture perfect day capital polo was witnessed by a sold-out crowd. "Team Yale" Liz Brayboy, Robert Burke, Branden Van Loon and Jim DiAngelis, competed against "Team UVA" Adam Klopp, C.B. Scherer, LJ Lopez and Nick Barry. UVA took a quick lead in the first chukker with two unanswered goals from Barry (a penalty 2 conversion and a field goal). Brayboy and DiAngelis put a goal each on the board for Yale in the second, leaving the score tied 2-all.
The third and fourth chukkers were controlled by UVA scoring a combined six goals (one from Klopp, two from Scherer and three by Lopez). Great defensive strategy held Yale scoreless as UVA mounted an impressive 8-2 lead. UVA widened the gap in the fifth with two more goals from Lopez, but a determined Yale answered with a score from van Loon. The score 10-3 entering the sixth and final chukker, Van Loon snatched another goal for Yale. Despite a scoreless chukker for UVA, time ran down, and Team UVA were victorious in the 32nd playing of the Harriman Cup with a final score 10-4.
Most Valuable Player and high scorer of the match went to LJ Lopez with 5 goals to his credit. Best Playing Pony was awarded to Pethanke, a Yale-owned horse played by Branden Van Loon in the fifth chukker. The Harriman Cup Award was presented to Martin Brown for an outstanding career in polo and his ongoing support of both Yale University and the University of Virginia polo programs.
