REGIONAL PRESIDENT'S CUP

Tournament History

The Houston Polo Club's first tournament of the spring season features a competitive roster with six teams: BTA, Pegasus/Propaganda, Horsegate, T Square Energy/SpecOil, ML Bar Ranch and Brown Bears/Whitehall Ranch. Amongst the competition is Team USPA member, Cody Ellis (ML Bar Ranch), as well as Team USPA alumni Mason Wroe (Pegasus/Propaganda) and Steve Krueger (BTA).

Beginning in 2020, Regional President’s Cup tournaments held nationwide will once again serve as a qualifying tournament for the National President’s Cup. Encouraging participation at the 4- to 8-goal level, the return of this tournament format will bring together teams representing USPA Member Clubs around the country and restore the relationship between the two trophies. The 2020 National President’s Cup will be held at New Bridge Polo & Country Club (Aiken, South Carolina) at the height of the competitive season. The National President’s Cup shall give priority entry to first and second place Regional President’s Cup teams of the same year.

As the country emerges out of the COVID-19 crisis, the USPA established an opportunity to support USPA Member Club events through the use of the COVID-19 USPA Polo Tournament Stimulus Package, which provides eligible USPA Member Clubs with waived tournament fees, trophies or trophy reimbursements, one professional umpire and $2,500.00 in prize money per tournament at no extra cost. Offered to each club for the first two USPA tournaments of 2020 following the COVID-19 USPA Tournaments and Events suspension, Houston Polo Club will be taking advantage of the program for this tournament.

REGIONAL PRESIDENT'S CUP TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The tournament will be comprised of two brackets with three teams in each bracket. The teams will each play three games cross bracket. Teams will be ranked one through six based on records. The top two records will advance to the final.

If team handicaps indicate the possibility for a tied game, teams will be asked prior to the match for either a shootout or overtime, which will both follow the USPA Rulebook. If both teams cannot agree, then teams will do a shootout. Each player, alternating teams, will shoot a Penalty 3. After all players have hit, the teams with more points will be declared the winner. Should a tie remain, all players will hit again, however the team which hit first will now hit second.

In the case of elimination, if two teams have tied records and they did not play each other, then the tie is broken by a shootout. If two teams have tied records and they have played each other, then the tie is broken by who beat who. If three or more teams have tied records, then the tie is broken by a shootout. Tied record shootouts will involve only one player from each team.

The Venue

A mere few minutes from downtown Houston, Texas, you will find the Houston Polo Club (HPC) located on 26 manicured acres. Established in 1928, HPC is one of Texas’ oldest clubs, comprised of the Bayou Club’s original fields and stables, as well as a tack shop, stick-and-ball field, hitting cage and covered arena. In addition, HPC has three fields in Brookshire, Texas, and access to over 18 other fields through private ranches. The club has proven to be a mainstay in American polo since its inception and has hosted and produced its fair share of notable professional players over nearly a century.

HPC has been providing the Southwestern Circuit with not only world-class polo, but the opportunity to learn and progress as an individual player. Houston’s league structure is considered to be one of the best in the country and can accommodate any skill level. Polo is played almost year-round with the club offering a fall and spring season, followed by summer leagues, winter arena and interscholastic polo.
