Iglehart Cup
Tournament History
The Iglehart Cup is a 16- to 18-goal tournament named for Philip L. B. Iglehart, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993. As a boy at the Aiken Preparatory School and later at St. Paul's and Yale, he was steeped in polo skills and lore from a young age. Upon leaving polo at graduation to pursue a business career, Iglehart was already rated 7-goals and after a 20-year hiatus returned to reclaim his old rating, which he held for 13 years. Some of Iglehart’s accomplishments include a U.S. Open Polo Championship®, leadership at Meadowbrook Polo Club in Medford, New York, creation of Gulfstream Polo Club (Lake Worth, Florida - now defunct), and taking the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame from a dream to reality.
The Philip Iglehart Award was established in 2001 and is given to recognize exceptional lifetime contributions to the sport of polo either on a regional or national level.
Held in 2017 as a stand-alone tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida, the 2017 Iglehart Cup title went to Equine Liquid Biocell and the 2018 title was awarded to Pilot. The 2019 edition was played as a subsidiary to the single elimination C.V. Whitney Cup, the first leg of the GAUNTLET OF POLO™. Santa Clara overcome Aspen 11-9, with father Luis Escobar, winning alongside his two sons Nico and Lucas. The Iglehart Cup returns this year as a stand-alone tournament fielding three teams, including Patagones, Stable Door Polo and Palm Beach Equine.
