The Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, October 4-7, 2018. The Thoroughbred Makeover is a $100,000 competition in which hundreds of trainers acquire a recently retired racehorse and prepare it over a period not to exceed ten months for competition in one or two of 10 riding sports. Formats for competition are designed to test the quality and progress of each horse’s training. The Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium is organized by the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP), a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to facilitating placement of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in second careers.
RRP created the Thoroughbred Makeover to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track Thoroughbreds, and to inspire trainers to secure the futures of these animals through training. In addition to benefiting the horses, the Makeover is intended to help trainers establish themselves professionally or as amateurs in their respective disciplines. Without good trainers, Thoroughbred racehorses cannot become great riding horses.
The Makeover also serves as the only national gathering of the organizations, trainers, and farms dedicated to serving these horses when they retire from racing. On Thursday, October 4, at 9:00am ET, all polo competitors will compete in a preliminary round in which they will do a three minute agility pattern without a mallet and then a three minute stick-and-ball session. Judges USPA President Tony Coppola and USPA Director of Services Carlucho Arellano will score both sessions on agility, willingness, control and movement of the horse.
The top six horses will move on to the Saturday finale where they will compete in an additional schooling session and a one chukker scrimmage. The scores from Thursday will carry over and the cumulative score from Thursday and Saturday will determine the winner. For more information on polo division judging criteria, please click here.

The suspension of USPA Tournaments and Events will be lifted for USPA Member Clubs in locales where hosting polo matches and tournaments is permitted under applicable state and local laws, executive orders and similar decrees. The USPA Member Clubs in these locales are encouraged to follow all such requirements of their state and local authorities with respect to polo operations. In addition, we also encourage all USPA Member Clubs to take the precautions recommended by the CDC. We are preparing a detailed list of best practices for USPA Member Clubs as they return to hosting USPA Tournaments and Events and plan to circulate these guidelines within the next week. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and will notify you if we determine a different course of action is necessary.
