It is with deep sadness that the United States Polo Association announce the passing of Rufino Laulhé, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on January 20, 2025. At just 15 years old, Laulhé was a rising star in Argentine polo, representing the future of the sport with his extraordinary talent, dedication and passion. He was set to make his debut in the Gauntlet of Polo in the United States in just a few weeks.

Laulhé’s charm and commitment to the game made him a key player, and his dedication had already earned him the honor of wearing the Argentine National Team jersey. He earned widespread recognition on the international stage, standing out in prestigious tournaments and being considered one of the most promising young players in the sport.

Last summer, Rufino and his brother Beltrán teamed up with Hilario and Toly Ulloa, forming a 27-goal team to win the Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club in England. Rufino scored seven goals and earned Most Valuable Player honors. Later, the brothers joined Lorenzo and Pedro Chavanne, winning an international test match between Argentina and Spain, 14-8, in Sotogrande, Spain. Again, Rufino was named MVP, after scoring a game-high eight goals. Rufino also competed in the 22-goal season in Sotogrande with Mateen Bolkiah’s MB Polo, which included Poroto Cambiaso and Pablo Mac Donough. The team made it to the final of the Silver Cup.

In the fall of 2024, the Laulhé brothers returned to Argentina where they competed in the Junior Argentine Open. Playing for Ellerstina NZPS, they made it to the final against La Irenita, winning the title, 10-7. Rated 5 goals, Rufino, playing at back, scored half his team’s goals, including two from the penalty line. Last December, Rufino was presented with a 2024 Centennial Award (Polo) for outstanding sports performance by the Argentine Olympic Committee.

The USPA extends its deepest condolences to Laulhé’s family, friends and teammates. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Laulhé's loss is a profound one for the entire polo community and his legacy will continue to inspire players of all ages for years to come.
