Newport Polo, home of the Westchester Polo Club in Newport, Rhode Island, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for teams to enter two USPA Arena Polo Tournaments to be held in October. The 2018 National Sherman Memorial (3- to 6-goal) will be held October 12-14, and the 2018 USPA Northeast Autumn Amateur Cup (0- to 3-goal) will be held October 26-28.
“We look forward to drawing the best competitors in the U.S. for the National Sherman Memorial, as well as a strong regional turnout for the Northeast Autumn Amateur Cup, and we are thrilled to add these exciting highlights to the Northeast polo season,” said Leighton Jordan, USPA Northeastern Circuit Governor.
“It is a great honor to host the historic National Sherman Memorial, and very exciting to start the arena polo season with high-caliber competition in both tournaments,” added Dan Keating, Club President and USPA delegate. “We invite you to make your mark in polo history.”
The National Sherman Memorial, inaugurated in 1934, is played to honor one of the giants of arena polo and is one of the oldest arena polo tournaments in the United States Polo Association.
Team registration for the National Sherman Memorial closes at 5:00pm ET on Friday, October 5. The Tournament Entry Fee is $400 per team, which will include lunch and refreshments each competition day, and Saturday night beach Lobster boil for all the players (additional guests can be included at $50 each). The tournament will be officiated by professional umpires from the USPA. Teams are limited and the complete schedule will be finalized once all the teams have registered. The USPA Northeast Autumn Amateur Cup is a regional competition intended to provide a highly-competitive format for arena polo players looking to continue their season during the best time in New England to still play outdoors.
Team registration for the USPA Northeast Autumn Amateur Cup closes at 5:00pm ET on Friday, October 19. The Tournament Entry Fee is $300 per team, which will include lunch and refreshments each competition day, and Saturday night Asado for all the players. Tournament brackets and schedule will be determined by draw. The tournament will be officiated by professional umpires from the USPA. The suspension of USPA Tournaments and Events will be lifted for USPA Member Clubs in locales where hosting polo matches and tournaments is permitted under applicable state and local laws, executive orders and similar decrees. The USPA Member Clubs in these locales are encouraged to follow all such requirements of their state and local authorities with respect to polo operations. In addition, we also encourage all USPA Member Clubs to take the precautions recommended by the CDC. We are preparing a detailed list of best practices for USPA Member Clubs as they return to hosting USPA Tournaments and Events and plan to circulate these guidelines within the next week. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and will notify you if we determine a different course of action is necessary.
