Tommy Hitchcock Memorial
Tournament History
The Tommy Hitchcock Memorial is played in remembrance of Polo Hall of Famer Thomas "Tommy" Hitchcock Jr., one of the most legendary American 10-goalers of all time. A four time U.S. Open champion, he also successfully represented the United States internationally on eight occasions garnering the coveted Westchester Cup in 1924, 1927, 1930 and 1939.
He reached a 10-goal handicap at age 22, the youngest player to have been awarded a 10-goal handicap at the time, an accomplishment only surpassed by Adolfo Cambiaso. According to Horace Laffaye in The Polo Encyclopedia, "During the Golden era of American sports, his name was on par with Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth and Bobby Jones." Hitchcock was killed in 1944 while testing a Mustang fighter plane and notice of his death was published on the front page of the New York Times.
Hitchcock grew up and spent much of his time in Aiken, South Carolina. Therefore, it is only fitting that the competition be held in the area that shaped his polo career. This year's competition at the New Bridge Polo & Country Club fields four teams vying for the trophy. 2017 champions Crestview Genetics is back to defend their title as well as finalists Bliss Polo under new name Upatoi Blue. They will be challenged by recent Pete Bostwick Memorial winners SD Farms and Aiken staples Blackberg Ranch.
