REGIONAL PRESIDENT'S CUP

REGIONAL PRESIDENT'S CUP

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Beginning in 2020, Regional President’s Cup tournaments held nationwide serve as a qualifying tournament for the National President’s Cup. The return of this tournament format will bring together teams representing USPA Member Clubs around the country and restore the relationship between the two trophies. The 2022 National President’s Cup will be back at New Bridge Polo & Country Club (Aiken, South Carolina) at the height of the competitive season. The National President’s Cup gives priority entry to first and second place Regional President’s Cup teams.

The Regional President's Cup has been played at clubs nationwide since 1998 and was first played for at New Bridge Polo & Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina, in 2011. In 2020, Hardscrabble had their sights set on an undefeated run through the tournament, but Panakeia scored the last three goals of the final including the golden goal from Del Walton to capture a thrilling 9-8 overtime victory. In 2021, Peachtree (Lucas Arellano, Randy Rizor, Marcos Onetto, Hope Arellano) headed into the Regional President’s Cup Final matching SIG (Matt Coppola, Deep Singh, Andrew Scott, Willie Hartnett) on a 3-1 record. Starting off strong with an offensive opening chukker, Peachtree set the pace and held the lead throughout the game to claim the title 9-6.

Returning in 2021, Active Team USPA Members and reigning Regional President's Cup champions Hope and Lucas Arellano will join Bottega alongside Upatoi Green and Foxdale under new team moniker Upatoi Green/Foxdale Equine. Also joining the competition field of six teams are Hutchinson Farms, Cooper H&S/Tipler Law, Field One and LBL coming off a spectacular 2021 undefeated 8-goal fall season at New Bridge Polo & Country Club.

THE VENUE

Driving into the New Bridge Polo & Country Club (New Bridge) in Aiken, South Carolina, one may think they had just entered an argentine estancia. With its signature four-board black fencing and orange clay dirt roads--it’s no accident that the New Bridge Polo Club alludes to the current mecca of polo. Founded by amateur polo player Russ McCall in 2000, the club was created in partnership with Argentine professional Matias Magrini.

The astounding 861-acre New Bridge development boasts five world-class polo fields in a private gated community. While that may sound intimidating, McCall points out that the gates serve less as a barrier to keep people out, but rather as a means to keep the occasional escaped horse in. The atmosphere of the club remains true to its humble beginnings, unpretentious, in a natural wooded setting, framed by southern pines and surrounded by an effortless tranquility.

The centerpiece of the club is the rustic colonial-style clubhouse. Constructed of old wood that was shipped from Argentina and assembled onsite, it brings the history and ambiance of the Argentine way of life to South Carolina. The clubhouse also conveniently houses a player’s bar, restaurant and outdoor asado area for post-game parties. Spectators are invited to sit on the porch with a spectacular view of Field 1 to watch the featured Sunday matches. New Bridge offers country living without the inconveniences of country distances. Cottage-style bungalows are situated on residential lots lining Field 1, as well as larger estate houses with the option to buy or build.
