The second National Youth Tournament Series Qualifier held in Florida this year was played at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida on Monday, April 11th. The IPC Qualifier brought two teams; Santa Clara and Pony Express together for an evenly matched game. Santa Clara came out strong in the first chukker with three goals from Tenzin Tognini, but Pony Express was not going to be left behind. The teamwork between Justin and Benji Daniels, teammates on the Zone 3 2015 NYTS National Championship team, put together consistent backshots and teamwork to end the first chukker 3-3.
The game continued very much the same, Tenzin, with the help of Liam Lott, continued to feed the ball to Santa Clara teammates Lucas Escobar and his brother Tiernan Tognini, but Benji and Justin’s teamwork helped get the ball to teammates Jacqui Casey and Jacobo Bacariza, who added a goal to the Pony Express score. With consistent penalty shots when it counted, Benji Daniels converted three undefended penalties, including one in the last 10 seconds of the game to tie the score 7-7 at the end of the fourth chukker.
According to NYTS Tournament Conditions, the game could not end with a tie, so the players returned to the field for a shoot-out, where all players from each team are required to participate. Santa Clara won the coin flip and at the end of the shoot-out determined to be the winner of the game 8-7.
