DELEGATE'S CUP

DELEGATE'S CUP

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Established in 1969, the Delegate's Cup (formerly known as the Eight Goal) has been a staple in the USPA National tournament calendar and was hosted uninterrupted for 45 years until 2015. The legendary Gulfstream Polo Club (now defunct) was the home of the prestigious tournament from the mid 1970s until it's unfortunate closure in 2016. During that time, only two teams, Brookfield and Bluestone Farm, were able to win the trophy more than once. In fact, Bluestone Farm owned by the Oliver family is the only team to have ever won back-to-back tournaments, having captured a total of four titles and three consecutive wins from 2005 to 2007, each team boasting at least two members of the Obregon family.

A highly-sought after national trophy, the competition relocated to the Houston Polo Club in 2016. In the contest's inaugural year at the club, 7 Bar W/Rocking P secured the win in a close final over BTA II 7-5. BTA once again advanced to the final in 2017, however were bested by Pegasus/Propaganda with the same two-goal margin from the previous year. After a two-year hiatus the Delegate's Cup returned in 2020 as a finals matchup between undefeated teams Roxstars/Vintage Polo 1 (Roxy Mounter, Lily Lequerica, Jimmy Seward, Shane Rice) and Sullivan Group/Vintage Polo 2 (Joe Bob Lequerica, Joanie Jackson, Nick Cifuni, Cody Ellis). Roxstars/Vintage Polo 1 executing a balanced team offense captured the trophy and the $2,500 prize money with a 6-4 victory.

The 2021 Delegate's Cup will feature an impressive nine teams vying for the honor to raise the trophy including defending champions Shane Rice and Roxy Mounter joining Chandler Ranch/ Roxstars, Jimmy Steward and Lily Lequerica teaming up with 2020 finalist's Joe Bob Lequerica and Cody Ellis for Vintage Polo with the remaining finalist duo of Joanie Jackson and Nick Cifuni competing for Quiet Creek Farm/Sullivan Group.

Amongst the competiton are Team USPA Alumni members Mason Wroe (BCI/ CW Petroleum) and Nicolai Galindo (Bearsden/ Plank Companies).

THE VENUE

A mere few minutes from downtown Houston, Texas, you will find the Houston Polo Club (HPC) located on 26 manicured acres. Established in 1928, HPC is one of Texas’ oldest clubs, comprised of the Bayou Club’s original fields and stables, as well as a tack shop, stick-and-ball field, hitting cage and covered arena. In addition, HPC has three fields in Brookshire, Texas, and access to over 18 other fields through private ranches. The club has proven to be a mainstay in American polo since its inception and has hosted and produced its fair share of notable professional players over nearly a century.

HPC has been providing the Southwestern Circuit with not only world-class polo, but the opportunity to learn and progress as an individual player. Houston’s league structure is considered to be one of the best in the country, and can accommodate any skill level. The polo school is run by 2-goaler Mark Prinsloo. The Houston Polo School offers an eight-week instructional course in both the spring and fall seasons that strives to nurture players as they develop their skills. Upon graduation from the polo school, players join the Margarita League. The next level in the nationally recognized Step Up Program is the 2-Goal League, followed by the Club League, an intermediate level in which players hire their own polo professional. Once graduated from the Club League, players have opportunities to participate in USPA sanctioned and national tournaments, as well as many tournaments held by the club.

Polo is played almost year-round with the club offering a fall and spring season, followed by summer leagues, winter arena and interscholastic polo. During the fall, HPC hosts numerous USPA tournaments and a week of women’s tournaments that culminates with the Women’s Texas Open and U.S. Open Women’s Handicap®.
