Carlos Gracida Cup
Tournament History
Born in 1960, Carlos Gracida began playing in tournaments at 14 years old and reached a 10-goal handicap in 1985, a ranking he held for 15 years. He was a dominating force with an amazing record of wins that included the U.S. Open Polo Championship® in 1982, ‘84, ‘85, ’87, ’88, ’91, ’92, ’94 and 2003; the C.V. Whitney Cup in 1997, 2001 and ‘04; the USPA Gold Cup® in 1980; the Silver Cup® in 1980 and ‘81; the 1998 Monty Waterbury Cup; and the World, North American, Chairman’s, Inter-Circuit and Barrantes cups. He also amassed an enviable international record, winning tournaments in England, France, Mexico and Argentina.
Gracida was the only player to win the American, Argentine and British Open Championships in the same year. And he did it three times. An international star and a true polo great, Gracida was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012 and taken from the world of polo too soon in an accident on the field in 2014.
